This beautiful set of a planter and two vases is what is known in France as a "garniture de cheminée" (fireplace ornament).
Its pale green and pink floral decoration is typical of the Art Nouveau style. It was made by the De Bruyn factory in Lille-Fives in the north of France.
In the 18th century Jean Bernard De Bruyn already ran an earthenware factory in Leuven, Belgium.
After his death in 1805, his son managed the factory and then passed it on to his own son.
It was the next generation that settled in Fives in 1864.
In 1889 De Bruyn was awarded a medal at the Paris World Fair. In 1917, a fire ravaged the factory, seriously disrupting production.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the factory employed some 150 workers and covered an area of about 1.4 hectares, but by the time the First World War broke out, it had grown to 400 workers.
Sold in the 1950s, the faience factory continued to produce before being definitively closed in 1962.
