More Information

Style: Directoire

The Directoire was a French political regime of the directorial type in place during the First Republic, from 4 brumaire an IV (26 October 1795) to 18 brumaire an VIII (9 November 1799). It takes its name from the "directoire", meaning the set of five directors, heads of government, between whom power is distributed.

The Directoire style is a style of furnishing and decoration in vogue from 1795 to 1803. It marks the transition between the Louis XVI and Empire styles, and is characterised by sober workmanship and simple design, with discreet curves and straight lines without rigidity, combined in great elegance. The Directoire style announces the Empire style without having its strictness. Responding to the taste of the revolutionaries for the republican ideals of the societies of Antiquity, the furniture had to be the exact copy of pieces brought to light by the excavations of Pompeii, or to be inspired by representations appearing on ancient vases or bas-reliefs.
