I've already had the opportunity to talk to you about 'travailleuses', also known as ' meubles à ouvrage' (sewing tables). These little pieces of furniture enabled elegant women of the olden days to store their needlework when guests came to the living room. The one I'm showing you here is highly unusual. Dating from the 1930s, it reflects the widespread availability of electricity in French homes, and has a floor lamp built into the top so that sewing in the evening could be done in good conditions. The tray, adorned with two delightful little handles, slides in two parts to reveal the storage compartment. Personally, I don't sew, but I can imagine it next to a comfortable armchair to create a little reading or relaxation area.

More Information

Style: Art deco

We are at the time of the Roaring 20s, Coco Chanel and jazz. A moment of creative and liberating euphoria following the World War One.

After 1925 and the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, furniture adopts the style Art Deco.

A concern for comfort predominates, the wood is often hidden by a leather or textile covering. Shapes become simpler but decoration is luxurious, mainly inspired by the Cubist.
